Mamma Mia The Movie: Highly Enjoyable but Only for Familiar Audiences
My wife and I finally decided to watch Mamma Mia the movie. Having seen the musical at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, we were anxious to see how it would evolve on the movie screen.
Meryl Streep is without a doubt one of the greatest actresses to ever grace the silver screen. She can virtually perform anything and her singing and acting are truly awesome. She steals the show period. Amanda Seyfried who plays Sophie, the daughter of Streep's character Donna, is a cute and lovable character that combines both innocence and guilt quite nicely. Though a bit over the top on the acting on some scenes, Mamma Mia is purely enjoyable. Especially when Pierce Brosnan takes a crack at singing, SOS and When All is Said and Done. Though it sounds like he sings with marbles in his mouth, Brosnan's chemistry with Streep makes up for it.
For those who are familiar with the story and/or have seen the musical on stage, I definitely recommend it. But if you're unfamiliar with ABBA music or have no desire to watch non-stop singing for 2 hours +, then spare yourself a trip to the theater.
